It is no secret that some of the members of the team that created the Palm Pre were ex Apple employees. So the fact that the Pre has the ability to sync with iTunes by pretending to be an iPod I am sure is not a coincidence or an accident. It is natural that the reaction to this over at Apple is not welcoming of such a feature from a non Apple product and I agree that it shouldn’t be. In a thinly veiled statement attacking the Pre but not ever mentioning their names Apple released this comment.
“Apple is aware that some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.â€
I feel that it is a low blow, and that the message sent by the Palm Pre team is not a positive one – to me it states that they are either to lazy to develope their own exclusive software to compete with the likes of iTunes so they instead will be low down dirty rats and instead hi-jack the iTunes software instead. Shows very little integrity from the Palm company especially since they responded that they are ready for Apple to do something like this – to me insinuating that they well attempt to again make the Palm Pre sync even after the said iTunes update.
