The app store has always been notorious for its iron fisted control of apps submitted. Even the smallest infringement on Apple’s native features makes an app likely to be rejected. While Apple does not allow third party app developers to develop apps that have the ability to run in the background, several of the native iPhone apps do have that ability. As these native apps run in the background, they often utilize a lot of system resources and the result can be a sluggish iPhone. Apps like iStat have allowed users to free up the memory being used. According to one developer;
Apple simply called us and demanded we remove the “free memory” feature. They wouldn’t give a reason as to why it had to be removed. We basically had a choice between removing it or having the app deleted by apple if we didn’t. Neither were great solutions but we talked with as many of our users as we could and more of them wanted updates then the free memory feature so thats the route we took.
Fortunately, there are plenty of jailbroken apps that can still free up memory and last time we checked, Cydia is still allowing those! If you guys want an alternative way to free up memory, try “force quittin” apps. Go into an app like Mail and hold the sleep/wake button until the shut off slider appears, then hold down the home button until the app quits!
