Yesterday, Apple begun seeding a new version of Quicktime 7.6 to various developers. Apple has asked these developers to test AAC enconding/playback, multichannel encoding, Apple lossless playback/encoding, and MPEG-1 playback/encoding on the new Quicktime 7.6 beta. No word on when the new Quicktime 7.6 will be available to the public. Quicktime 7.6 should come in both Mac OS X version and a PC version. In addition, there are several reports that the new Macbooks and new Macbook Pro contain hardware that support h.264 decoding. Several experts speculate whether the new Quicktime beta will support h.264 in older Macs. Reports show that the latest seed showed no drop in CPU usage when it decoded 1080p Quicktime streams on older Macbook Pros. But as of the moment, there is no official word on whether Apple will include h.264 decoding on older Macs. With the new NVIDIA graphics processors in the new Macbooks and new Macbook Pros, this new version of Quicktime should enhance the viewing experience of users. Please stay tuned as more information comes our way.
