BLACKRA1N 3.1.2 Jailbreak Tutorial

October 12, 2009

Apple News

GeoHot did not disappoint. His new BLACKRA1N jailbreak worked perfect for me on the new iPhone 3.1.2 and with all iPhone and Touch versions! Here is a tutorial on how to apply the most simple jailbreak yet, but first let me tell you who this jailbreak applies to.

-This is a PC Jailbreak (Mac 3.1.2 Pwnage Tool Guide here).

- This is ONLY A JAILBREAK, NOT A UNLOCK TO USE THE IPHONE  FOR OTHER CARRIERS.
If you use this, and you are not on AT&T in the U.S. or 02 in the U.K. than you will lose your carrier unlock.

- If you are Jailbreaking a iPod Touch 3G it will work, but know every time you reset the device you will need to run BlackRa1n again. Also referred to as a “tethered jailbreak”

*UPDATE* Newer MC models now work with BlackRa1n 2 release!

Great, now  if you are PC user with any generation of iPhone on AT&T or 02, or you are jailbreaking a iPod Touch of any generation lets begin.

Step One

Restore iPod/iPhone to latest version 3.1.2

This is not just an update we are doing, this is a full restore, so backup if needed and click on RESTORE, not update. Yes, if you have jailbroken before, you know this is not the norm. Usually we create a custom firmware first, this time we just do an update like any other abiding non-jailbreaking citizen. Simple.

Step Two

Download BlackRa1n >>here<<

While waiting for your iPhone/iPod to clear everything out and restore, go ahead and click the link that leads to Geo’s site and download BlackRa1n by clicking the window icon. We recommend you download to your Desktop for quick access.

Step Three

Make it Ra1n!

20340 BLACKRA1N 3.1.2 Jailbreak TutorialAs soon as you have fully restored iPhone/iPod to 3.1.2 and you have completed the BlackRa1n download make sure it is still synced to your computer and click on the BlackRa1n.exe and “make it rain”. Your device will automatically go into Recovery mode. No more manually holding down buttons icon smile BLACKRA1N 3.1.2 Jailbreak Tutorial .  If you see Geohot’s splash screen you know its working. It will finish asking you to donate if you can. Restarts and you should see your new BlackRa1n app.

Step Four

Choose your Apps

*UPDATE* DO NOT INSTALL BOTH ICY AND CYDIA AS IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE.

Go ahead and click on the BlackRa1n app and you will have 3 app installs to select from. You can choose all 3 if you like. Cydia is a must I would say, Rock is a really great new Jailbreak store I highly recommend you check out. Icy – I am not a big fan of. It essentially is the lite version of Cydia. I have had many headaches from Icy, including boot freezes, random resets, and overall instability. Stay away.

Troubleshooting: If you are pretty sure you did everything right, you can try these troubleshooting steps. If still no go, get ahold of a Mac to use Pwnage Tool or downgrade to another firmware jailbreak with RedSn0w.

1.Turn off your WiFi
2.Turn your iTunes Helper off.
3. If language setting is other then english. Set back to english for now.
4. As soon as you see Geohot face…disconnect your usb cable.
5. For us, it took around 4 min to reboot by itself so give some time.

I have the new blackrain and i turned off my iphone and turned it back on and it went to recovery. If i recover it will i have to but black rain back on? my iphone is a 3gs

  • Ali

If I use Blackrai1n, will it erase everything on my iPod?

  • Rio

Once its in recovery and you hook it back up to itunes. You need to rerun blackra1n again and it should restore your phone back to what it was before you turned it off. Sux I know. Im trying to find a solution for that on the web, if there is any :(

i did this and works but if i turn off my iphone 3gs it gets stuck on recovery mode wat do i do!!!!!!!!!!!????????????!!!!!!!!!!!

i jailbroke my ipod and blackrain and stuff are on it but when i download cydia it doesn’t download

  • AbC

Whenever you restart it, it will show the “recovery” screen. According to Geohot’s website, this is a new feature for the 3g and 3gs under the name “tethered boot”. Just re-run blackra1n to boot your iPhone. Restoring it will wipe out all data so that is a no. Go to blackra1n’s blog to find out more info = http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/

Hi, i’m from Malaysia and not using AT&T or 02 (well obviously), but my iphone 3gs is originally unlocked device when i got it from my network provider.

Question now is, can i use this blackra1n to jailbreak my iphone? does it have any negative side effects? Was confused whether other users from other countries could use this jailbreaker without any harm done, as u’v stated above:

At first I tried this i compatibility mode (XP Service Pack 2) on (32 bit) Vista and it never worked. So as a last resort, I tried it with compatibility mode turned off, and viola! I see geohots face. It’s downloading Cydia and Rock as I type this. Good developing, geohot! w00t!
