Apple gave the green light for developers to start testing out the push notifications on firmware 3.0 beta. This new feature will allow a variety of apps to operate in the background of the iPhone. Potentially it can be a bit of a resource hog if the owner goes overboard, but we’re glad its here nonetheless. Instant messenging clients would be much more useful with push notifications. Apple released their statement today;
Start testing your applications using the Apple Push Notification service today. Log in to the iPhone Dev Center and review the Apple Push Notification Programming Guide and Getting Started video. Team Agents can log in to the iPhone Developer Program Portal and proceed to the App ID section to create the components necessary to enable and test applications using the Apple Push Notification service.
Expect the push notifications feature to be available on the iPhone this summer when firmware 3.0 is released.
