Pwnagetool Tutorial: iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3.1.2 with Pwnagetool 3.1.4

Pwnagetool 3.1.4 was released recently making it possible to jailbreak the iPhone or iPod Touch running on 3.1.2 firmware. If you’re not sure what jailbreak is, check out the article on why jailbreak. For the rest of you, this is probably a pretty routine process to go through every time Apple releases a new firmware version. So let’s get started!

iPhone iPod Touch 3.1.2 jailbreak #1

Before you get started, there are a few requirements you must meet first before you can jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch on 3.1.2;

-You must make sure you have an iPod Touch 1G/2G or iPhone 2G/3G/3GS. This jailbreak will not work for the iPod Touch 3G (3rd generation). The dev team tends to focus on the iPhone so the iPod Touch often takes a back seat in their work.

-Your device must be running on 3.1.2 firmware.

-You must have the Pwnagetool 3.1.4 from the dev-team. Download it here!

-You must have a copy of the 3.1.2 firmware file for your specific device. Download it here!

Once all these requirements are met, you are ready to begin!

Pwnagetool has gone through multiple iterations and as a result of this, the dev-team have been able to refine the GUI until it is as simple to use as possible. Simply fire up the program now and select your device. We recommend selecting simple mode but if you want to be difficult, we’ll go the expert mode.

Once you’ve selected your device, simply click the blue arrow to move forward. You will now be prompted to locate the IPSW (firmware) file you just downloaded. Go through and find the file if it doesn’t automatically locate it for you. On the expert mode, you will be presented with multiple windows that asks you to configure your jailbreak before it builds the custom IPSW file for you.

Go through and select the options that you want. Make sure that if your phone is not activated through an official carrier (AT&T here in the States) that you select the “activate”. If your phone IS ACTIVATED BY AT&T, MAKE SURE TO UNSELECT “Activate”! We also don’t recommend the custom boot logo as it tends to mess with some people’s devices.

Some people also report that changing the root partition in this part to around 700 MB may fix issues with the jailbreak if you are unsuccessful the first time.

Once you make your way through the menus (if you are ever unsure just don’t mess with it and hit continue), you will click build to build the custom IPSW file.

Building the firmware could take up to 10 minutes so please be patient during this phase. Once completed, it will ask you if you have ever jailbroken the device before, if you are unsure, just click “No”. You will then be asked to close the program and put your iPhone or iPod Touch into recovery mode. Here’s how to do it if you’ve never done it before;

Once your device is in DFU mode, simply open up iTunes, go to your device, hit the “update” button while holding down alt and it should bring up a menu in which you will need to find the custom firmware file that was built by Pwnagetool. That’s it! Just wait for the firmware to load into your device and your device to reboot and you should have a freshly jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch running on firmware 3.1.2

    That link you provided for the firmware files is pretty stupid. This article involves Jailbreaking a 1G iPod Touch, but the selection to download the files on the link are protected by Apple if I am not mistaken. New link?

    That isn’t saying anything – there is no sense to be made from this: If it is activated? By an official carrier?

    What if you buy the phone unlocked? What does that mean?

    An unactivated phone is one that can’t be used – so what does this mean if your phone isn’t activated, and you say ‘officially’. Can someone write this correctly?

    My ipod touch 1G is a essential iPod, Personal digital assistant and a lot more, as well as has already been since I recieved it. It continues to work on the recent iPod system software program, and any iphone app I would need it to operate. I’m working with it to leave this remark right now. It’s safe to say it is really a much more in comparison with solely an “excellent hobbyist system” — it is an fantastic iPod
