Now I know I might be comparing apples with oranges, but jkOnTheRun compared the sales of the Apple iPhone to the sales of netbooks during the past quarter and the results are worth noting. Apparently, over the summer, netbooks have outsold the Apple iPhone. The reason this is worth noting is because Steve Jobs once called the netbook a “niche” product. It was also stated by Apple that the Apple iPhone could replace a portable computer. If these sales figures are any indication, it shows that the netbook market is growing faster than people expected. The Apple iPhone was introduced in June of 2007, while the first netbook, the ASUS Eee PC 701, was introduced in October of the same year. Since then, the netbook have sold more units than the Apple iPhone. This shows consumers want the whole computing experience instead of a mobile device that looks nice. Apple, most importantly, should take note of this. This shows that they should consider releasing a computing device that would lie between the iPhone and the Macbook. There have already been rumors that netbooks would be getting 3G. If anything, Apple should look into this. They are missing out on a large part of the market.
