Microsoft’s Ray Ozzie Talks Apps

Microsoft Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie (Bill Gates’ successor) dismissed the idea that apps will be the determining factor for mobile platforms. “All the apps that count will be ported to every one of them”.

It’s a completely different situation from the PC market, where software’s built to run on a Windows or a Mac.” He goes on to say that mobile apps don’t require much development, which makes them easy to migrate across platforms.

Microsoft is currently boasting a lackluster mobile platform, and it will be near 2010′s year end before we see Windows Mobile 7 . Where they’ll have another shot at competing with the iPhone, Android, and forgettable Palm.

Ozzie is right to an extent–we’re already seeing popular iPhone apps ported to Android, after all–but his comments seemed a bit too defensive for someone who should be talking about how Microsoft will fix their own mobile issues, which is an ongoing trend from all mobile developers. They talk about how the iPhone is not the greatest and try to nit pick it’s flaws – when their own device is a complete failure. All the while iPhone is running off with the top sales.

How about from now on – Microsoft, Palm, and whoever else is vying for the chance to tople the iPhone, you talk about how your own device will be better and how you are going to fix your own issues, because the current string of iPhone bashing is not working for you.
