opera mini 4 300x132 Opera Mini not even submitted for Apple to reject?

Last week, we reported on a story by the NY Times in which the iPhone version of the Opera browser, properly dubbed the Opera Mini, was submited for the Apple App Store and has been rejected by Apple because it of how similar it is to the iPhone Safari browser. It was also believed that the Opera Mini was coded using Java, which would ultimately make it useless on the iPhone. This move by Apple has been criticized in the past. So when the story originally surfaced, it came as no surprise. Now blogger John Gruber of Daring Fireball has reported that:

My understanding, based on information from informed sources who do not wish to be identified because they were not authorized by their employers, is that Opera has developed an iPhone version of Opera Mini – but they haven’t even submitted it to Apple, let alone had it be rejected.

We are currently awaiting more information because all of this is just speculation (or we just don’t know who we should believe). We are just awaiting official word from either Apple or Opera Software. Please stay tuned!
