So you have your iPhone or iPod Touch and it has been  freshly updated to firmware 3.0 but you are wondering how to jailbreak it? The iPhone firmware 3.0 has some great improvements most notably (at least in my opinion) the push notifications system which lets apps essentially run in the background so it is well worth the update if you haven’t already updated your iPhone or iPod Touch. The jailbreak followed pretty closely on the heels of the 3.0 release and we’re glad to bring it to you in the following article. Of course all credit should go to the people on the iPhone dev-team who have slaved away to make our iPhone and iPod Touch devices truly our own. If you’re still not sure what jailbreaking is, you can check out the introduction to jailbreaking article. Alright we don’t want to hold you any longer so let’s begin!

iPhone & iPod Touch 3.0 jailbreak: Step 1

Make sure you have all the necessities to get started. To jailbreak the iPhone or iPod Touch on firmware 3.0, you will need 3 things. You will need the iPhone or iPod Touch running on firmware 3.0, the firmware 3.0 file on your computer, and a copy of Redsn0w; the program used to jailbreak your device. Here are the links to download what you need, once you download the firmware, go to iTunes and hold shift while clicking update to update your iPhone or iPod Touch to 3.0.

Please note it is recommended that you back up all your files before attempting the iphone or iPod Touch jailbreak just in case. Chances are nothing will go wrong but its better to play it safe.

iPhone & iPod Touch 3.0 jailbreak: Step 2

Once you have all the software and hardware, turn off your iPhone or iPod Touch by holding the power button until the option comes up but make sure it is still connected to your computer via the USB dock.

Open up Redsn0w and follow the instructions. First it will need to make a custom firmware file and it will do that by editing your existing firmware 3.0 file on your computer.

Hit the “browse” button on Redsn0w, find your firmware 3.0 ipsw file and hit open.

Just sit back and let Redsn0w work its magic. It will notify you when complete, it should be done fairly quickly

So once it prompts you to this step, make sure you have “Install Cydia” checked. We’ve had problems with Icy so we recommend leaving that unchecked. In case you are wondering, Icy is a more streamlined version of Cydia but until they work out the kinks, its best to leave it alone.

This is really the only step that can be tricky when jailbreaking your iPhone or iPod Touch. At this point, if you haven’t done so already, make sure your iPhone or iPod Touch is switched off and connected to your computer. You must switch your iPhone or iPod Touch into DFU mode to upload the jailbroken firmware created by Redsn0w. If you’ve jailbroken your device before, it should be pretty simple but for those of you who have yet to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch ever, we suggest watching the video below first before following the instructions because this time around they come at you pretty fast.

Once your device is in DFU mode, you can release the home button and Redsn0w will basically do the rest. Remember if you fail to bring the device into DFU mode, you can always just try again!

Once the process completes on your computer screen, there will be some additional processes on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Just wait until your device restarts and is operable before doing anything. There you have it! You just performed the iPhone or iPod Touch 3.0 jailbreak! If you guys have any questions, feel free to leave a comment. If at first you don’t succeed, just restore and try again.

    Every time I try this, I just get a black screen on my ipod that won’t go away unless I restart it. Then I see that nothing has changed. Also, I don’t get any little pictures or anything, after entering the special mode thing for redsn0w my screen goes white for a couple seconds, then it goes black. Even if I leave it for an hour, it stays black until I manually turn it off and turn it back on. Anybody have any ideas?

    I have a 2g ipod touch and the 3.0 firmware loaded on my ipod, and it’s the same one I’m using for redsn0w.

    I hAve managed to jailbreak my iPod touch thanks to ur tutorial. However I have one problem. When I switch off the iPod by holding on to the power button and sliding to power off, when I try to switch on the iPod again it is frozn and all I can see is a a little circle spinning around and nothing happens. When I connected to my pc, it tells me that I need to restore the iPod. Can u pl help me out I have re jailbroken my iPod touch and I am also typing this MSG using my iPod touch.

    Works like a charm… the only thing this website doesnt tell you is how to get free games after that… it took me a bit of researching, but to save you guys some time, follow this:

    Once you have gotten everything done, follow these steps to REALLY unlock your ipod
    1. open the newly installed app, Cydia
    2. Go to manage in the bottom, and go to Sources
    3. In sources, add in a new source “http://cydia.hackulo.us”
    4. Once you have done that, go to search and type in “appsync”
    5. Install the program “appsync for OS 3.0″
    6. Restart your ipod, and you are open to the world of pirated games and apps on your Ipod…;)

    Hey I did have jailbroken my ipod touch first generation perfectly with redsnow. I can do everything I could do with the other hack but one very important thing. I cannot restart my ipod. When you try it looks fine…It loads the apple with the black screen, but then after it loads the apple with the black screen stays and it has a swirling loading thing in the middle of it. When i plug it into the computer the screen stays the same, but it knows that the ipod is there. :S The only thing that I can do to make the ipod work again is to restore it through itunes. I have jailbroken the ipod many times through redsnow, it works fine after but that same problem i cant restart my ipod. Anyone wanna help me resolve my issue? It would be much appreciated.

    I upgraded to 3.0 [on a MacBook] by dragging and dropping the file in HD>Users>(User Name)>Library>Itunes>ipod Software Updates

    itunes did the work for me. Then, I used redsn0w. It kept giving me the “Waiting to reboot..” thing, but after I took it out of DFU (by basically doing the same thing to get it into DFU) and then put it back in, start redsn0w again, and when it said “Waiting to reboot” I unplugged the ipod and plugged it back in and got the white screen. Good to go :)

    Worked perfectly. Except when I got to the ‘waiting to reboot’ message, I had to unplug my ipod then plug it back in again. I then got the white screen and redsn0w worked its magic. Brilliant – thanks!

    I tried to follow your steps and it did say IPSW successfully verified.But after that when i hit > Next ..the Redsnow Application disappears . I have turned my touch off as instructed.What could be the problem here ?

    noname, did you download the firmware file? if you did it should be on your desktop or where ever your downloaded files usually go to on your computer.

    Hey I tried to jailbreak this and it worked perfectly but after I clicked “finish” on my computer I waited for my iPod touch’s last bar to load, but after the last bar got done my whole iPod’s screen just turned off. That was last night. I don’t know what to do now. Should I try to put it back into DFU mode? If not, what should I do?
    PLZ help!

    Zach and Trevor, restore and try again. Sometimes there are hiccups in the process and most of the time a failure on the first try will usually not happen on the second or third try.

    Finally, I just unplugged the iPod from my computer & plugged it back in…BAM, worked like a charm!

    I didnt get it to complete. Every time it finishes it doesnt put the CYDIA icon on and I can’t do anything about it. So as far as I know it worked but without the icon, and im screwed..or it didnt work AND then idk what happened.

    1 thing… I assume it takes a while for it to download as I’ve had “downloading jailbreak data…” on my ipod screen for about 5mins now. I guess it’s doing something!

    I thought I’d managed to do it and had got to a screen with a pineapple loading stuff… then the iPod turned off.

    I though; OK, maybe it’s rebooting… no… OK, I’ll turn it on… nothing… again… nothing… hold power+home… nothing except the noise of a connection from my computer and a message saying USB Device Not Recognised.

    My iPod is therefore not showing on iTunes so I cannot do a restore from there.

    What the hell can I do??

    I’ve been trying to jb this itouch for many hours now and have tried all sorts of programs and methods, even firmwares for unlocking this 2G itouch.

    I always have the same problem (1601). I read on apple that it says to fully reinstall itunes and try again. I did this and still no dice across all firmwares i’ve tried (2.2.1 & 3.0). the error occurs when i am restoring. I couldn’t even restore to factory via shift-click [firmware]. I had to restore/update through itunes. 1601 is killing me, someone help please! thanks in advance

    iPod Touch 3 0 firmware update

    This updates your iPod Touch to the latest 3.0 firmware.
    This is the orriginal update from apple, so no jailbraik yet.
    How to use:

    Check if you have a first generation or second generation iPod
    (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_Touch for details)

    Connect your Ipod, Open iTunes, hold SHIFT and press ‘Check for
    Update’ or ‘Restore’ (depends on if you want to update or a
    clean install). Select the appropriate firmware file. Update
    takes about 15 minutes.

    What if I fuck up?

    If you manage to brick your iPod, for example by turning of your
    machine during the update, you can always do a clean recovery by
    folowing these steps:

    1.Make sure iPod is completely powered off.
    2.Hold the home button while its off.
    3.While holding the Home button, connect the cable. The iPod should power on.
    4.Keep holding the Home button.
    5.The Connect to iTunes image should come up.
    6. Congrats, you in recovery mode.

    In I-tunes:

    1.Click SHIFT+recover
    2.Select the appropriate firmware file.

    note: On a MAC, use option-click instead of shift-click

    even unplugging the usb and plugging back in when it freezes does not work for me, i just stay on reboot, tried the other methods also, i.e starting again after it fails, yes it completes but there is nothing on the itouch that has changed, its not jailbroken with cydia, and it goes through the process way to quickly. I have my reservations whether this works, or the people who have managed it are keeping something back!!

    I am having the same problem as matt, were I do everything, but have that screen. Im not to sure what to do right now. When I start up Itunes it tells me that I need to restore my Ipod Touch to the factory mode. Obliviously I shouldn’t do that, sorta cause i already did it.     Ughmm, so I worked on redsn0w and it says that press the on/off button like said in your video, and I did, and after that it says “waiting for reboot” It’s so long..the first time I tried this I waited like 1 hour and it didn’t work..     Like now, who dosent work with iPod( it’s me too) have to downgrade iPod touch to 2.2.1 or 2.2 gezz I loves this firmwere. But the some apps work only on 3.0 so u have to decide iTunes app or jailbreaking ur iPod touch( I hate this!!!) anyways, it’s the only solution guys!

    helppp i used redsn0w to jailbreak my 1G itouch on 3.0… redsn0w crashed twice after the ‘third stage’… (i tried it twice and it crashed both times) now my apps won’t open after i updated it to 3.1.2… apps work fine on 3.0, but i really want 3.1.2 software

    I just jailbroke my ipod touch 2nd gen yesterday. redsn0w worked perfectly and everything wet fine. My problem is that i did it at my boyfriends house. And now that im at my house my ipod wont connect to my internet it connected over there but it wont here. Like when i press my internet on the wifi screen it a has the blue check mark saying that it is connected but when i gt on the internet or an app or something it says that there is no internet connection. Idk why it does this.how can i get my pod to connect to my internet again without restoring it?

    *Once you have gotten everything done, follow these steps to REALLY unlock your ipod
    1. open the newly installed app, Cydia
    2. Go to manage in the bottom, and go to Sources
    3. In sources, add in a new source “http://cydia.hackulo.us”
    4. Once you have done that, go to search and type in “appsync”
    5. Install the program “appsync for OS 3.0″
    6. Restart your ipod, and you are open to the world of pirated games and apps on your Ipod…;)

    actully..i trnd my ipod on Dfu mode bfre the processs nd nw its trnd of nd i cnt evn trn it on….nd if i restore nw it tkes 3hrs….so wht to do nw…???m damn scrd nd evn my dad will kill me nw…so ple guys tell me as soon as possible…!!!

    HELP! When it says wait for your itouch to reboot, I waited over 45 mins and it stayed in the same screen, black but with light. IT WONT REBOOT HELP ME!!! If you could help me send a friends request to eatraichu on aim or [email protected] on MSN!

    I have itouch 3.1.3 and has been trying to jailbreak it for months. Then i found this website and thought this would actually help me. I downloaded redsn0w for mac 0.9.4 and got the “iPhone1.1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw” and for everything, it worked just fine! but when my itouch restore, the screen got black. then an apple logo appeared with a bar below it. I thought it had finally worked, and waited for a several hours until the bar was full. I was excited. As when it turned on, i hurriedly opened home screen but there was NO cydia icon! and everything- games, pictures, etc was GONE. i was excepting it gone but there should be a CYDIA icon on there! i was so pissed off! i tried it again for about 4 times, but no luck. please HELP me! :( (

    Tried running redsn0w 6 times now……and it keeps getting stuck on the downloading Jail break data with the circle thing loading. what do i do? Does it matter I’m trying to upgrade it to the 3.1.3 from the 2.2.1? Please Help.

    every time it says done i hit finish and it loads the data then it goes to the picture of usb to Itunes logo. and i hav to keep restoring it. how do i fix it? ive tried redoing it several times

    narmally how long it'll take when starting on downloading jailbreak data???? i have follow every step from you but seem like it get stuck on the downloading jailbreak data…. the icon of jailbreak show on my iphone and i have been waiting for 5 mins.. the computer screem show uploading ramdisk and the running bar seem like didnt moving from just now??
