The new iPhone firmware 2.2 might drop any time soon. And when it does, we might be one step closer to being able to unlock an iPhone 3G. The iPhone Dev team have updated their blog and they have stated that they are able to spawn background tasks. All the iPhone Dev Team needs to do now is implement the new lock when iPhone firmware 2.2 is released. Hopefully it works out. Check out this video from the iPhone Dev Team. Big props to the iPhone Dev Team!

iPhone Dev

In case you don’t know the logo above, the iPhone Dev team is the team behind all the iPhone unlocks. Unfortunately, the iPhone 3G has yet to have been unlocked by them. With the iPhone Firmware 2.2 coming soon, the iPhone Dev Team have issued a warning to all those who wish to unlock their iPhones in the future to be wary about blindly installing the firmware through iTunes. The firmware may nullify what little progress the iPhone Dev team have already made in unlocking the iPhone 3G. If however you do not wish to unlock your iPhone and simply want to jailbreak it, there shouldn’t be a problem as the iPhone dev team have already hacked the beta version of firmware 2.2.

iphone keyboard hack

Someone already hacked into the iPhone and created a keyboard attachment to help them type more efficiently on their iPhone. This hack takes it a step further by using an Xbox 360 Chatpad and XBee wireless module. Along with a jailbroken iPhone and another XBee module attached to the iPhones serial port the user can wirelessly type on his iPhone. As Han Solo once said, she don’t look like much but she has it where she counts.

iPhone-Dev

The iPhonedev team showed some progress on their unlock of the iPhone 3G. The iPhone 3G has been a particularly hard phone to unlock with Apple having taken steps to boost up its security. The iPhone-dev team has been working on it since the release of the phone. Their announcement came in the form of a short blog post on their website. They have successfully modified the baseband code which is a “very useful ability”.

The full unlock will probably see AT&T’s business drop significantly as users now have the option of using other carriers. AT&T has been highly criticized for its poor coverage and high prices. Unlocking was a huge problem on the original iPhone.

podcaster

Apple has been pulling apps off the App Store recently that they feel don’t serve a purpose, but many of these apps are really cool and many iPhone owners still want them. A developer found a slick way of still getting these banned iPhone apps. The article below discusses exactly how to get these banned iPhone apps:

What prompted the debate in the first place was Apple’s decision to reject an app known as the Podcaster, which would have permitted you to listen to podcasts without first downloading them in iTunes. Because the app “duplicates the functionality of the Podcast section of iTunes,” says Apple, they decided to reject it from inclusion in the App store.

To get around what many people consider to be an unfair ban, Alex Sokirynsky, the developer of the Podcaster app, decided to utilize a little-known feature of the iPhone/iPod Touch: “Ad Hoc App Distribution.” This largely unknown feature allows any developer to distribute apps themselves, without using the App Store to do so.

Unfairly Rejected?
On almerica.blogspot.com, Sokirynsky wrote how he doesn’t understand why Apple can reject his app for duplicating iTunes functionality when similar apps do the same. Specifically he mentions how any calculator app duplicates the functionality of the Apple calculator. Yet what’s even more strange, he notes, is the fact that there are already several apps that allow you to listen to a podcast outside of iTunes. For example, popular apps like Diggnation and Mobility Today are designed just for streaming podcasts. Those apps are not banned from the App Store, so why is his?

iphone pay as you go

It’s been recently discovered that the new Apple iPhone 3G works without a contract for both voice and data without any hacks or modifications or even a jailbreak. Just use an AT&T Pay as You Go SIM card with a data plan and it will work as usual. Too bad you need to monthly plan to even buy a new iPhone 3G or this would be a great option for many people. This would come in handy for international use however. Maybe 2 years from now when all those pesky plans will be up users can keep their 3G iPhones, dump their plans and just pay for however many minutes they feel they’d need.
