Yesterday we heard about an issue with aftermarket displays on the iPhone 8 and iOS 11.3. Now a new issue has been discovered when the display is replace on certain models like the iPhone X and others.

According to a recent report by Engadget, if you replace the display on the iPhone X, iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus it will disable the ambient light sensor on the handset. This apparently occurs on both aftermarket parts and when using a genuine Apple display.

This new issue has been discovered on devices that are running iOS 11.1, iOS 11.2 and iOS 11.3, so it could be a problem which has existed since the launch of Apple’s new iPhones last year. What exactly is causing the issue has not been revealed as yet.

There are two possibilities here, one is that Apple is doing something to disable the ambient light sensor when a new display is installed. The second option is that this is a bug, the sensor is actually disabled by iOS during the boot processor, so this is something that could be fixed in a future software update.

Some third party repairers are suggesting that Apple is doing this on purpose as it does not appear to happen when Apple replaces the displays on these handsets themselves. As yet there is no official word from Apple yet on why this is happening.
