Steve Jobs announced the new iPod nano with a built-in video camera at yesterdays keynote address which was met with huge applause, mostly because Steve Jobs was in the room. The new 5th gen iPod nano sports a 240 by 376 pixel resolution camera that can shoot video at H.264 VGA, 640 by 480 pixels and up to 30fps. It also has a larger 2.2 inch display, a built in pedometer that works with the Nike+ software, a microphone, speaker and FM radio. All this for an entry price of just $149! The polished anodized aluminum iPod nano will be available in two models, the 8GB at $140 and the 16GB at $179. The 8GB model can hold up to 2,000 songs and up to 2 hours of video with the 16GB version being capable of holding 4,000 songs and 16 hours of video.
The videos can be synced up to your Mac or PC and uploaded directly to YouTube with a single click. For all the artistic types, the iPod nano can shoot video in either landscape or portrait modes. If you plan on shooting your own blockbuster Hollywood movie but don’t want to spend too much on special effects the iPod nano has 15 real-time effects built-in. You can shoot video in Black and White, X-Ray, Film Grain, Thermal, Security Cam, Cyborg, Bulge, Kaleido, Motion Blur, Mirror, Light Tunnel, Dent, Stretch, Sepia and Twirl modes. I’m sure we’ll see a plethora of indie band videos, would be filmmakers, and subway pervs using their iPod nanos to document their creations.
Below are some of my favorite iPod nano video filters. The Cyborg one is especially cool, and I have to admit, the quality is pretty darn good. It’s not movie-making quality, but for YouTube it ain’t too shabby.
