This is a side by side comparison of the iPhone to the instinct, done by The iPhone Blog. This is what they had to say aside from the video:
Compared to the original iPhone 2G, the Instinct actually holds up quite well. It’s not as elegant as the iPhone, the touchscreen isn’t as responsive (but it does give you a little haptics-vibrate on every tap), they keyboard isn’t as good (but does offer a landscape version throughout), the apps are a mix of quality iPhone knocks off and java craplets, the browser is decent but nowhere near the quality of the iPhone’s, …I could list the “not as good as” for quite awhile. The bottom line is that, feature-for-feature, the Instinct holds its own, and it’s especially nice that Sprint’s ‘unlimited’ plan includes sms, data, gps, etc.

it’s a great review, thank you for visiting my blog
i’d be rather buying the iphone than buying the instinct
though it’s an alternative
also the instinct is not sold in my country (mexico) or i don’tknow i will check
it has by far better hardware (in some aspects) than the iphone
but the User Interface is lame compared to the iPhone’s

You iphone freaks kill me with all your talk about apples 3g grandness. strip away all the glamor and features from both phones and sprint still kicks iphones as…
Besides the fact that sprint is a cell phone company that has perfected its tech with its latest release of the instinct. It has done something that at&t would never do. and that is to finally give the consumer a chance to have full mobile capabilities with its simply everything plan; plus the style and capabilities to make anyone look good. Now at&t and all other mobile company’s have to jump on the band wagon or get left behind. But no, and mark my words at&t will milk this cash cow until their customer start jumping ship…. and most already have

Hello Genesis,
Why would you say “strip away features in a comparison”? Can you be a bit more specific on what mobile capabilities blow away the iPhone/ iPhone 3g? We are really interested to hear what you have to say.

iPhone is ok but no voice command, no landscape texting, no MMS, no video recording, no real GPS, ATT plan much more expensive than Sprint (with worse coverage). Why does Jobs always withhold things he could have put in the new version? So you have to buy the NEXT version to get real GPS, etc… Pity.

Thank you for giving clear and fair comparisons on both phones. Your presentation has helped me to decide which product is best for me

I cannot give you an iPhone comparison, because I’ve never owned one. Having some experience with a friend’s iPhone, I can say the animated transitions (such as photo albums, etc…) are certainly attractive.
As a Sprint Instinct owner and company IT guy, I have to say the Instinct is the finest device I’ve ever used. It is simply amazing, and the TV features and ease of use only make the Instinct one of my best purchases in years. I started with a Samsung Ace on the same Sprint plan and hated the device, so I traded it in for an Instinct and am much more than thrilled.
My goal here is not to compare iPhone to Instinct, but to tell you that if you do choose the Instinct you will have a feature-jammed communicator and entertainer that will be a perfect, nearly flawless travel companion.
They thought of everything, including two batteries (!!!) in the box with a portable charger for the second battery (!!!) – even thought the Instinct is not nearly as much a power hog as the Ace. You can buy cheap car chargers anywhere, as the device (like the Ace) is charger-compatible with the Blackjack II – for which car chargers are all over the place.
The Instinct is just a well done device. I love mine, and the Sprint network has proven a formidable competitor to AT&T and Verizon in my area (Southeast Tennessee)
Thanks!

well i agree with James, apple is always in the search of how to make ppl buy their new phone with high prices…hahhaha but well ppl who use iPhone are like GOAT, and that JOB knows very well by making available limited in market. Its like black friday sell,, ppl are standing in line from 5 in the morning
) hahahhahah but they have no clue what the INSTINCT is far better then iPhone…some said to me that iPhone has glass screen when INSTINCT has plastic but well what happen when you drop our phone
) hahhahahah GOOD luck apple users…be ready to buy new iPhone with healthy price when INSTINCT comes with windows 6.1 lolz INSTINCT rocks.
October 5th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
I would get the iPhone only if there was nothing else out there like it BUT thank God there is and it’s better, I think apple in any way shape or form sucks and I’d hate to imagine myself being limited to iTunes.
October 5th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
oh and I forget to mention that the Sprint network gives you a lot more bang for the buck. Unlimited EVERYTHING for $99.00

I owend the instinct it was bugging ,the screen is too small. after playing with my friends G3 Iphone. over all the iphone is far seperior. I’m stuck in this sprint contract. My friend works in tellicommunications and said its the best, most reliable cell phone he’s ever had. the touch screen pad is faster then my push button ppc 6700 and its not twitchy like the instict. the spent 80million in advertising the poor instinct. compare to the edsel car

Ok, I’ve read all the reviews and must say im stuck! You see, since I’m not 18 yet, I couldn’t get an iPhone when my sprint contract expired, so I was convinced to stay with sprint and get the Instinct with my dad. And I must say it has its goods, and bads. I’ve played with many iPhones and have an iPod Touch myself, and must say the touch responsiveness on the iPod is FAR supirior to the Instinct. Sometimes it takes a few taps to open an app on the instinct! I love how it vibrates when you touch the screen on the instinct, and I love that it has a landscape keyboard! Come on apple!!! What were you thinking not giving a landscape option???? The tv on the instinct is ok, but the picture is so bad! I hate how you unlock the phone, its so annoying! and the screen is SOO damn small! when I txt i ALWAYS hit the space bar or ? instead of the letters above it. compared the the iPhone, I’d prefer the iPhone cause its much easier to txt, even in Portrait. And the web browsing on the Instinct is HORRIBLE!!! if i have a wifi connection around, I use my iPod instead, cause its so much easier and looks way better! And the apps for the Instinct are not impressive at all, while I have 50+ for my iTouch alone. Yes, the instinct has gps, voice commands, video, but thats all stuff I don’t plan on using a lot. So when apple comes out with a new iPhone, I’m getting that for sure, and giving my instinct to my brother. I would be 18 already and have built some credit.

Well,I’ve owned both and I’m torn. The Iphone 3g won’t let you send pictures and the only ringtones you can have are Itunes. I do love the Iphone because I had the first one and then the 3G. The Instinct Plan is all inclusive with your web and texting where AT&T charges separate for everything. I like that you can send pics and can download ringtones and music.I’ve been with AT&T for 12 years and have now switched to Sprint.
October 31st, 2008 at 5:20 am
bull%$^&, you CAN d/l music from itunes over 3G/edge on the iphone. i do it daily. i have friends with the inSTINK and they want to leave sprint for att just for the iphone 3g.
November 1st, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Im still undesided, both phones are good but pesonally i think i like the iphone better.
November 7th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
the instinct is way much better than the iphone has way more stuff but the iphone just looks better and thicker instinct has memory stuff games and tv and iphone doesnt
November 12th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
apple has the cooler features. i like being cool. and if sprint could have i phone and the instinct both as an option i would choose the i phone.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:29 pm
your not very good at using the instinct. I have one, and you missed many cool features.

some of you guys sound dumb.;)

Instinct owners make me laugh with all their talk about how it’s an iphone killer. How it has television and a video recorder. First of all, I have no desire to watch television on a little tiny screen, such as the instincts, nor would I want to use a phone to record video that likes and sounds like sh#t. Plus the Iphone is way more user friendly and all around looks and feels better. Oh and by the way James, the Iphone has an application that you can download for free that allows you to make voice commands, and also has a free app for multimedia messages. Apple is also in the process of creating a turn by turn GPS which will be included in a future update.

I OWN AN INSTINCT, AND I MUST SAY, I WOULDN’T TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING. I HAVE PLAYED AROUND WITH THE IPHONE AND THERE’S NOWAY I COULD EVER GO THERE. I LIKE SHOOTING AND SENDING VIDEOS AND PICTURE STRAIGHT TO MY FRIENDS PHONES, WHICH WE ALL KNOW YOU CAN’T DO ON THE IPHONE. I’LL ADMIT THE IPHONE DOES LOOK BETTER, BUT A TWENTY DOLLAR BILL’S DESIGN LOOKS BETTER THAN THAT ON A HUNDRED DOLLAR BILL, BUT WHICH WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE.
December 10th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
APPLE HAD TO REGROUP AND TRY AGAIN TO TOP THAT BAD @SS INSTINCT BUT IT’S COOL, IF THAT WHAT YOU LIKE. STOP HATING ON THE INSTINCT IT REALLY DOESN’T HELP THE IPHONE, IT REALLY JUST MAKE INSTINCT OWNERS FEEL BETTER ABOUT BUYING A BETTER PHONE. SORRY IPHONE OWNERS, IT IS WHAT IT IS.

You guys are all retarded. Each phone has it’s ups and downs. No one phone has the best of everything. I have an instinct and my best friend has an iphone. I like things about his phone and I like things about mine. In the end, they’re phones. Ethan made a good comment, why use a device that is of lower quality (TV, Video, Internet) when there are devices built for that reason. Any of the extras on either phone don’t mean anything other than to say that they have it.( statis ) I’m sure you got along without them before. The one thing that I will comment on is battery life. The instinct has a better battery. To me batteries are an issue for any cell phone. Either phones battery sucks compared to an ordinary cell phone.
Cheers

Funniest part of the whole demo was the continual, “Instinct not getting good reception in here” and if you look at the iPhone, it was getting solid bars. In other words, if you want reception, iPhone wins.
Interface is much slicker and with each feature that was demo’d there seemed to be a, “ok, hassle” or, “don’t quite have” whereas with the iPhone the worst that could come up – no free games right now.
Dollar for dollar (and ability to get reception), iPhone wins hands down. The single solitairy thing I don’t jive with Apple about is their battery idea…wish they shipped spare battery and let me swap on the fly – other than that, iPhone’s got my vote.
March 7th, 2009 at 9:33 am
As far as reception goes, thats your service provider not the phone it’s self.
March 14th, 2009 at 11:13 am
Not to mention the speed was still about the same. (Samsung no bars, iphone full strength) I wonder how the Samsung would do in a good area.
Pour testing enviroment, they should have been tested in an area with equal signal strength.

I have an instinct, there are some things about it that drive me crazy, but it is just a phone, i love the internet on it bc you can manipulate it to text wrap, if your patient, and sprint service is amazing for cheaper. They are both good phones, I wont be able to compare as well until I get an itouch, but thats ok. My biggest thing about the too, is instinct doesnt have AIM, but iphone does, yes that sucks but i dont use IM so much anymore so its not too bad.. idk there both good phones! It just depends on what you use them for. I love my instinct for the easy voice commnads, visual voicemail, easy email, and the navigation is wonderful!!
April 26th, 2009 at 9:47 am
the iphone sucks it has no real gps no tv and it is very expensive. Everybody has the intinct cause its way better iphone has poor internet.Get the intinc is way better and cheaper.Intinct rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Who ever gets the intinc is cool.who ever gets the iphone is fooling himself.there both really good quality phones. The intinct is a phone for kids and adulsts that wants a cheap valueble phone. the iphone is for adulst not kids because its too expensive, every adult has it relizes that the intinc is way better.soooooooooooo go intinct!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Leran, before you try to debate on something, I am going to ask you to learn how to spell and learn how to spell the name of your own phone. The correct spelling pf your phone is “Instinct”, not “intinc”. You need to go back to the first grade to see how to spell,”ADULT, VALUABLE, and REALIZE.” Are you sure your display name is not,”LEARN”, because you know you need to go back to your phonics. I tell you about uneducated people these days. GO BACK TO ELEMENTARY.
