The Apple iPhone 3G has recently passed the Motorola RAZR as the most popular cellphone in the world. The study from AdMob compares ad requests and it showed that the iPhones went from 2.1 percent up to 4.1 percent a month later. The rest of the list had devices from Nokia and RIM. In the US market share of cellphones was still dominated by RAZR at 7.1 percent but the iPhone 3G is definitely catching up as the iPhone jumped from seventh all the way to second place at 6.9 percent. Looks like things are getting better all the time for Apple.

At the Large Installation System Administration Conference held last week for all engineers and system administrators, Apple’s Director of Engineering of Unix Technologies John Hubbard gave a presentation which included the following slide:

And if this slide is any indication, it shows that we should be expecting the Mac OS X 10.6, or dubbed Snow Leopard, in the first quarter of the year 2009. Apple has said that the main focus for Snow Leopard was quality and performance. They wanted to improve the support of multi-core processors and GPU processing in order to help developers use these capabilities more efficiently. I’m pretty sure many of us are happy to hear the news as we all can’t wait till Mac OS X 10.6 releases.

The one thing that really irks me is the fact that the iPhone, which I believe is the best phone out there in the market, still lacks some simple basic features, such as copy and paste. But the one feature that the iPhone should not lack is flash. Adobe yesterday introduced their latest version of the Flash player for the Windowns Mobile and Google Android operating systems. Adobe has stated that almost 98% of all computers carries some sort of Flash. Although, Adobe has announced they are working on a version for the iPhone, it seems it is very unlikely the iPhone will get Flash. This is due to Apple’s ridiculous and absurd Terms of Service and lack of open-source technology. If the iPhone were to get Flash, then iPhone users would be able to watch videos on Hulu.com or play free flash-based games. But what would Apple do then. They would then lose business because people would stop going to iTunes for videos or the Apple App store for video games. If Apple does not implement Flash into their phone, I predict that other companies would develop phones that do support Flash, such as Windows Mobile and Android, and therefore Apple would lose some market share. The lack of Flash could mean the demise of the Apple iPhone. Not having Flash prevents the iPhone from being the best phone ever developed.

Have you ever got caught doing something you shouldn’t? I know I have, I know I’ve passed the buck on many times as well. A worried wife posted on an Apple Support site that she found explicit images on her husband’s iPhone. The images were sent via Yahoo email to another woman, but the husband admitted to taking the images but claims he never sent them. Then who did? He claims his iPhone did! The husband explained to his wife that we fell victim to an “iPhone glitch.” The iPhone has had problems but taking raunchy pictures and automatically emailing them to another woman is not one of them.

If you have the Google Mobile Application, you should be receiving an update for it soon. In fact, it is not even an update, but rather, you will have to delete the old application and download an entirely new version of the Google Mobile Application. And with the Google Mobile application, you should be given access to the new Voice-Enabled Search application. With this new feature users would be able to use to the iPhone and ask any question and Google will find results for you. So if you want to know the score to the Liverpool FC vs. Fulham game, just ask your Google Mobile app, and it will find the score for you. The update is available at the Apple App Store.

Google Mobile with the voice search feature is now available for the iPhone, if you already have Google Mobile on your iPhone the update for the original version is available for download as well. Now you don’t even need to type your greasy fingers on your iPhones touchscreen, the new voice search simply lets you speak to do a Google search. You have to speak somewhat clearly however as it can sometimes give you a search that you did not intend on. Check it out at the Apple App Store.

The Numberkey App turns your iPhone into a numberpad for notebooks that may lack such a feature. The numberpad has been a mainstay of the standard keyboard for a reason, it is convenient for crunching numbers on computers. However, many notebooks trade in the numberpad for a more portable size which is OK too but there are times when you’re crunching your finances or doing your math homework when you really wish you could have a numberpad. The app is built for Macs and will connect via Wifi. The touchscreen is not as responsive as a true numberpad and if you’re used to blazing fast speeds, you might be in for a bit of a let down. Don’t let that deter you though as this app is only $1.99, a true bargain.

A new application for the Apple iPhone gives every Mac user their dream peripheral: wireless keypad. The application, simply called NumberKey, basically transforms the Apple iPhone into a ad hoc wireless keypad using the Wi-Fi feature of the Apple iPhone and the Mac. It also includes four different skins for the users to choose from. The application comes with a small desktop client and it will cost you about $1.99. The application should be available at the Apple App Store.

The new rideshare app for the iPhone promises to cut carbon dioxide emissions by over 70 Million Tons by the year 2020. The company behind this app (named Avego) is Mapflow and it hopes to have a customer base of around 20 million by the year 2020. The app will use the built in GPS functionality of the iPhone to track the routes of the user and match that up to the routes of other people. It will then provide recommendations based on the most commonly taken trips. If it meets its target, Avego should reduce the total number of car emissions equivilent to about 146 billion less miles driven on California roads per year!

To be fair, the iPhone is not single handedly responsible for all of the victims listed but the iPhone does represent the culmination of smart phone technology and its inauguration into the main stream. Smart phones have come a long way but long before the apps, there was a time when people had multiple devices in their pockets to fulfuill their mobile needs. The list is as follows:
